Feature Friday: Equilibrium

Equilibrium began as a one-off project with an expiration date: they got together to play one show, once only, and ended up continuing as a band almost a decade and three official albums later. The original members René, Sandra, Andi, Hati, and Helge got together in 2001 to play a concert, which was so well-received that they decided to continue working together as a band.  Their melodic metal of mythic proportions caught on with fans everywhere, propelling them to success and sign to Nuclear Blast, one of the most iconic metal labels around.

In 2003, Equilibrium released a demo that was eagerly consumed by the public as a legit album rather than just a demo.  This led to them signing to a record label and releasing Turis Fratyr in 2005. Unfortunately, their relationship with the label soured and several metal labels courted Equilibrium for their rosters.  Eventually, they signed with Nuclear Blast in 2006 and released their second album Sagas in 2008.  It immediately entered the German Media Control Charts at #30.

Earlier in 2010, Equilibrium began to record a new album with Robse, the new vocalist.  Though you’d expect a getting-to-know-you period of awkwardness and experimentation, the band fell into a working rhythm immeidately and Robse was a perfect fit with his powerful presence to augment the epic sound of Equilibrium. The result of their work, the new album Rekreatur, continues with their larger-than-life melodic metal with exotic flourishes of hymns and battle-worn ruggedness.

You can play along with a cut from Rekreatur “Die Affeninsel” on JamLegend.  To find out more about Equilibrium and find out where to purchase Rekreatur, you can visit the Nuclear Blast site and the Equilibrium page there.

Feature Friday: Joseph Patrick Moore

Jazz musician and producer Joseph Patrick Moore sends a love letter to the continent with a rich music heritage that has inspired his genre-bending style in To Africa with Love.  With contributions from noted musicians such as Charlie Wood and Dove Award winner Seth Condrey, the latest work by Moore is not only a testament to his musical talent but also to the amazing network of musicians that he has cultivated over his career.

Born in Knoxville, Tennesee, Joseph Patrick Moore was raised in a family that valued music, encouraging Moore to join the school band where he first picked up sax and drums.  He eventually earned a full scholarship to study bass at University of Tennessee and University of Memphis, which made him into the fretless and fretted bass virtuoso he is today.  Moore has worked with such diverse talents as Marie Osmond, Carol Channing, and Jerry Lewis and was nominated for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences premier player award.

Eventually, Moore moved to Atlanta where he was taken under the wing of jam band guru Col. Bruce Hampton.  There, he expanded his network of musicians by touring with Col. Bruce, Leo Neocentelli (Meters, Neville Bros.) and the bluegrass fusion band Blueground Undergrass.  With his recorded output and musical notoriety growing, Moore formed Blue Canoe Records, an all-digital label to showcase not only his own music but also below-the-radar artists that he champions.

To Africa with Love features 13 songs that merge the best of jazz, funk, rock and contemporary.  The title track is a song dedicated to a continent plagued by conflict and exploitation, easily filed under Adult Contemporary as well as jazz.  The album also includes cuts for those who like to move to music such as a reboot of the Meters classic “Fire on the Bayou” that remains faithful to the original Southern funk core but incorporates more urban elements.  All the tracks showcase Moore’s nimble fingers on the bass, creating a soulful foundation to the rock, urban, or even pop melody flourishes.

You can play along to “Bass Song” a Joseph Patrick Moore a song from To Africa with Love featured on JamLegend.  To find out more about Moore and his new album To Africa with Love, please visit his official site, MySpace, or his newly launched Facebook page.  You can purchase music by Joseph Patrick Moore on iTunes, Amazon, and other fine retailers.

Combining the DIY ethos of an indpendent act with the professionalism of a working band, Silent Descent, a septet from Dartford, UK, has climbed the ranks of unsigned acts to become king of the hill.  Their accolades to date would make any band, signed or unsigned, jealous.  Metal Hammer called them the “trance-metal juggernaut the world has been waiting for” and the revered Kerrang! Radio designated them the best unsigned band.  Their self-released album Duplicity was appreciated by an international audience, pushing the video for the title track to the top of The Pit’s viewer-voted charts above other metal acts with bigger budgets and slick videos.

Without a label breathing down their necks, Silent Descent was able to complete an album to their satisfaction with guitarist Tom Callahan at the production helm; the sound is massive and modern, but with a raw edge--unique and captivating to a wide audience of metal aficionados.  When they take their act out on the road, it’s all or nothing: strobes, lasers, and a unrelenting wave of confident energy push their live performances to the limit.

For a band without a designated PR machine like Silent Descent, it’s important to keep options open and search for new opportunities to connect with and find new fans.  Enter JamLegend, a new platform for Silent Descent.  Cal from the band told us, “JamLegend has gone down great with our fans, and has also taken over all our band practices as no-one plays their real instruments anymore.  We're glad to be on board."  In the time they have been on JamLegend, Silent Descent has collected around 19,000 plays and counting.  We’re embedding “Bring-In-Sanity” below for your gaming pleasure.  To find out more anout Silent Descent, please visit their MySpace page.  You can purchase Silent Descent’s Duplicy album via iTunes.

Feature Friday: Scrub Club Records

Running an independent label is a thankless business especially with the whole music industry capsizing with grandiosity matching the Titanic. But what if you ran a label as a not-for-profit venture and gave tons of songs away or sold albums for cheap? Scrub Club, nearing its 10th year, is doing better than ever in promoting its stable of hip hop and spoken word artists by putting the music and its fans first and foremost.

Scrub Club was founded by Madhatter McGinnis in 2001, though it started out as a recording space known as Spare Bedroom Studios.  Already, the crossed-out dollar sign “No Dough” logo was in effect to demonstrate the stripped-down, simple way of doing things.  Through several music projects and by connecting with fellow artists, Madhatter says, “I decided that the Sparebedroom name had to evolve into an actual record label and never forget its ghetto roots, and I decided to call it Scrub Club Records.”  Scrub Club began to gather a roster of hip hop artists.  That’s hip hop as in community-based, enlightened, and never taking themselves too seriously; you won’t find glorification of money, cars, and harems of women here.

Madhatter continues, “In May of 2006 I made Scrub Club completely not-for-profit and started burning cds away for free as well as releasing everything online for free. This blew up our popularity, and suddenly tons of people everywhere had heard of us.”  Scrub Club’s success continues with their 2007 release 8Bit Bullshit hitting 10,000 downloads and as of this writing, expanding their roster to 17 artists, 39 albums, and 450 free downloadable songs.  “With each new member we bring in, we are able to offer other up-and-coming artists services ranging from beat production to digital artwork to mixing, Scrub Club has pretty much become a one stop resource for budding artists all while releasing amazing albums ever since,” explains Madhatter.  Scrub Club celebrates its first decade next year, and we wish them continued success into the far future!

Dr. Awkward:

Dr. Awkward (Josh Watson) was born and raised in San Diego, and because of this, much of his music is influenced by mainstream andunderground West Coast Hip Hop. In early 2009, Dr. Awkward released his first solo project “NextGen,” in which Doc proclaims that he is the future of Nerdcore Hip Hop. The EP was hailed as aninstant classic, with such hits as “Geekquilibrium” and “Impostor.” With this release, Docsigned to the independent label Scrub Club Records.

POWERLIFTER:

The odd, uniuqe debut album from the Gameboy hacking, six packing, stage dive ransacking duo is ready for upload directly into your ears. It's called "1" ("Arctic Submarine"). This release is a fast-paced adventure that will make you feel like you’re headbanging to a brutal metal album at the same time as playing the toughest, controller-biting Capcom side-scroller. In other words, you’ll need more than the stock three lives you’re given, some of you might not make it past the last level. Don’t worry, there’s two powerups on the way to aid you in your audio journey. WHAT A RUSH!

Kabuto The Python:

Kabuto is thought to have originally formed out of dark matter near Tau Ceti some 2 million years ago. Since his arrival on Earth, there has been much speculation as to his true form. He himself has not helped matters, describing himself in turn as a python, a deity, an alien, and incredibly ill. Over time, this has stabilized somewhat, and to all appearances, Kabuto seems to exist as a kind of Holy Trinity – rapper, snake, and alien beast. It has even been theorized that Kabuto is, in fact, an alter-ego of famed Nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot.

Diabeats:

At a glance, Diabeats is a shy, nerdy, goth girl who owns way too many Star Wars shirts and can master any rhythm video game you can throw at her. Put her on stage, though, and she transforms into an aggressive, liberated, dancing harlot of rhyming. Everything that she is unable to be in daily life, she can be so in her music. This was one of her major draws to rapping – being able to loose her inner beast, tackle solemn and painful topics in a humorous manner, and find peace in honest lyrics about nerd life.

MadHatter:

MadHatter considers himself an “everyman” in the underground entertainment business. While he openly claims not be the best at what he does, he does put in an unbelievable amount of effort into his work and strives to do better. Always learning, always evolving, he not only runs the Scrub Club label, he also produces music, records and mixes albums, spits complex, mathematical flows, contributes artwork both digital and traditional, does graphics design for the site and printed products, and lots of other tasks that most labels have to outsource. It’s a lot of work, but keeping Scrub Club going is just as important to him as taking care of a step family. Except… a good step family.

ZeaLouS1:

Famed for a calm, affable demeanor that belies his imposing size, Zealous1 is more than the titular King of the Boss Fights; he is a friend to all nerds, a self-styled defender of the underdogs. While many in Nerdcore espouse the superhero mindset, Zealous truly takes it to heart. He is, at once, a nerd’s nerd and a musician’s musician. He throws himself wholeheartedly into everything he does, and what he does best is take the listener by the hand and lead them from the busy San Diego streets to the burning wastes of Azeroth and back again.

____________________________________

Benjamin Bear:

His style is a result of an eclectic blend of influences, including 1970’s era progressive rock, industrial metal, grunge, and underground Hip Hop. Combined with his left-of-center perspective and proficient lyrical prowess, he manages to create something truly unique, yet still danceable.

____________________________________

Deafinition:

Deafinition started his Hip Hop career, not with flows, but poetry.  He took to words like Wilford Brimley took to diabetes.  By the age of 18, he had dropped his first album and went on stage for the first time. This was the cornerstone of the foundation, and in later years, that foundation would grow into the Dark Tower of Babel that we all know as the Mighty Word Slinger: Deafinition.

Kasparov:

In a successful band biography, you want to mix things up just enough to ensure it sounds like something that could be interesting on a greater level than just “the usual old garage band.” Throw in an anecdote that sums up how you think and how you play. If your van lit on fire and you were stranded in the middle of the desert between shows and you ended up writing two of your most popular songs while waiting for a tow truck, find a way to integrate that story. It will humanize you even further, provide a back story for your music and help you connect with fans.

King Pheenix:

King Pheenix is a force of nature. Combining strong Hip Hop style and flow with nerdy ideas like a mad scientist proved to be just what this Frankenstein monster needed. After years of perfecting his style, he was introduced to the magic that is the Nerdcore genre by fellow artist MC 8bit. Frontman of the LNT crew, one half of the group Kill Screen, and now a die hard musician under the Scrub Club banner, The V1 Pheenix is ready to help Nerdcore rise and raise some hell in the process. KPX is always willing to collab, and will bring the fire to anything he touches, like a propane midas.

Southside:

Fusing their hip-hop roots with a punk rock ethos and the sounds of indie rock, Southside formed as a side project of several rock bands united to record haphazard rap songs between tours. While they began rapping over pre-recorded beats, Southside’s current lineup features a mix of beats and samples with live instrumentation: drums, guitar, bass, and a DJ. In recent years, Southside has played showcases at South by Southwest, Northwest Music Fest, REVERBfest, and Nerd Invasion.

StarF:

Raised by internet culture and obsessed with music, StarF blends a mixture of poetics and edgy humor into everything he produces. Every new project is approached as the beginning of something that will better himself rather than a means to an end, and as so, StarF is consistently progressing and leveling up within the Nerdcore community. While socially awkward to a noticeable degree, StarF still loves everyone in the community he meets. Despite any awkwardness, he will never hesitate to grab a mic and rock it for a crowd.

Other Scrub Club Artists:

Feature Friday: Inspired Flight

Genre-bending is nothing new in music, but winning approval for your mad science project from old school masters can be tough.  Inspired Flight, a San Diego, California duo, takes music to new heights by drawing inspiration from divergent genres and time periods--from the Beatles to the Gorillaz, Miles Davis to Gang Starr, and Pink Floyd to Radiohead--and formulating an exciting blend of hip hop, indie rock, electronica, dub, etc.  Songwriter and self-taught musician Chavez and turntablist slash multi-instrumentalist OpenOptics layer analog instruments with digital soundscapes: with only the limits of their creativity reining them in, they weave together an intriguing, timeless sound that oscillates from yesterday to today to tomorrow.

After three years of hard work, they are set to release their debut We All Want to Fly with guest appearances by Living Legends members Eligh and Scarub, as well as Rugged Monk of Black Knights and Inspectah Deck from the one and only Wu-Tang Clan.  Considering the amazing guest appearances as a seal of approval by these established artists, it goes a long way to show Inspired Flight have created something special that deserves close attention.  Of course, success like this doesn’t come overnight: Chavez was inspired early by his dad shredding guitar on stage and picked up the instrument, while OpenOptics took guitar lessons in 3rd grade, bought his first turntables in 8th grade, and even joined a jazz trio in college.

All of this musical experience culminates in We All Want to Fly, Inspired Flight’s first album.  In addition to tons of lovingly crafted music, there is genuine emotion--from heartbreak to uplifting optimism-- at the core of this record.  All of this must have resonated with the artists contacted for possible collaboration.  Inspired Flight were actually surprised their inquiries were met with an enthusiastic yes from many parties, including Eligh of Living Legends who jumped on the tracks “Pull, Push, Let Go” and “An Ocean of Great Whites.”

Inspired Flight’s We All Want to Fly is available exclusively for streaming and purchase at the band’s official site at www.inspiredflightmusic.com and will be available everywhere on July 6.    Inspired Flight will be on tour in August, so please stay tuned to their site, MySpace, Facebook, or Twitter pages to stay in the loop!  We’re featuring the title track “We All Want to Fly” with Inspectah Deck from the Wu-Tang Clan.  Enjoy!

Feature Friday - Brian Posehn

I know what you're thinking.  It's probably the same thing I thought.  "Hey it's that one dude from TV!"   In addition to being a hilarious comic, Brian Posehn put together an all star band to explore his love of metal, and it's here for you to play on JamLegend!

If you pay attention to what you watch, you might know him best as Kevin; the weirdo mail boy from Just Shoot Me, or from any of his guest appearances on other sitcoms (Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, Bernie Mac, The Showbiz Show with David Spade) and movies (The Wedding Singer, Run Ronnie Run, Dumb and Dumberer, The Devil's Rejects). Most notably though, you know him as part of the creative core of HBO's legendary, Emmy-nominated Mr. Show, his Comedy Central special, and from the critically-acclaimed Comedians of Comedy Tour.

Since the 2006 release of the groundbreaking 'Live In: Nerd Rage' album, Brian Posehn has found fame on TV (The Sarah Silverman Program), co-wrote 'The Last Christmas' Comic Book, appeared in several movies and supplies his voice in Rob Zombie's animated 'The Haunted World of El Superbeasto' but he never forgot his first two loves, metal and stand up. Posehn has never been more hilarious than on 'Fart & Weiner Jokes,' the new release featuring two more thrashing songs with his band. Brian Posehn is the Slayer of comedy!

We're Back!

The site is back up, and faster than ever! Dry land has never tasted so good!

We sincerely apologize for the downtime this week. It's been a rough few days to get the site back online after a recommended optimization went wrong and corrupted our database.  To compound this, a MySQL bug prevented us from quickly and easily restoring a backup.  With a little luck and a lot of hard work, we've restored all but a couple of hours of data; quite a successful restoration given the situation.  However, due to the gigantic size of our scores table (our users play so much!), only scores recorded after June 4th, 2010 will show on the site.  Older scores are not lost, but are unavailable until the full restoration completes.

On the bright side, we took advantage of this nasty scenario to perform many optimizations that been put off because of the downtime they required.  So while you did have to stare at our down page for two days, you shall see less of it in the future since the site should perform much better now!

Thank you for all your support and understanding, and don't worry, this particular issue definitely won't happen again.

Best,

The JamLegend Team

The Perfect Storm

Hey everybody, you might have noticed our beloved JamLegend has been down.

perfectstorm3.jpg

We can't go into a huge amount of detail right now, but a series of circumstances came together to create the Perfect Storm.

This picture kind of shows the state we're in right now:

02-01perfectstorm.jpg

If you really need an explanation, we'll let Todd, the meteorologist from the Perfect Storm movie describe: "Look, look at this. We got Hurricane Grace moving north off the Atlantic seaboard. Huge... getting massive. Two, this low south of Sable Island, ready to explode. Look at this. Three, a fresh cold front swooping down from Canada. But it's caught a ride on the jet stream... and is motoring hell-bent towards the Atlantic. What if Hurricane Grace runs smack into it? Add to the scenario this baby off Sable Island, scrounging for energy. She'll start feeding off both the Canadian cold front... and Hurricane Grace. You could be a meteorologist all your life... and never see something like this. It would be a disaster of epic proportions. It would be... the perfect storm."

Okay, back to weathering this storm. Don't worry, we haven't lost anyone or anything yet. Will keep you all posted.

Feature Friday: Abused Romance

Sometimes, bands come out of nowhere and start going somewhere right away.  Abused Romance is one talented band who was signed to a record label to launch it as a business with their debut release.  It seems unheard of for a new label to launch with a brand new band, but not if the record label is Freeway Records, founded by Russ Regan who was the president of Motown Records (yes, the Motown Records) and partner Kent Jacobs who worked with huge names like Prince, the Police, REM and KISS.

Regan and Jacobs discovered Abused Romance in July 2009 and immediately signed them: “Russ and I felt that this band had the skills to launch the label. What I love about Abused Romance is their strong musicianship and the fact that they all have the killer instinct. Amit Ofir and Meir Yaniv have great producing skills and their writing abilities are superstar quality!” Guitarist Amit Ofir shows that despite the swift turn of fortune, they're down to earth about their impending success: “We are a tight group of close friends, and are very passionate about our music. Whether we are on or offstage, writing songs or rehearsing, we give our all to this band and its purpose.”  Abused Romance recorded their debut album Shine in Los Angeles, with producer Justin Gray, who has sold more than 20 million records worldwide, working with artists such as Joss Stone, INXS, etc. and mixed by legendary engineer Randy Staub who worked with U2, Metallica, Nickelback, Bon Jovi, etc.  It's unimaginable to have people of that caliber working on your debut album, and Abused Romance must be pinching themselves to make sure it's all happening.

Shine will be released soon in summer 2010, but you can preview the song "Hit and Run" on JamLegend right now!  To find out more about Abused Romance, please visit their official site, MySpace, or Facebook page.

Feature Friday: Slightly Stoopid

Slightly Stoopid is nothing but--they're a savvy bunch who know how to write great, catchy songs and keep things DYI and close to home.  What started out as a fun music project for high school kids back in 1995 became a career in music when the late Bill Nowell, frontman for Sublime, decided to sign Slightly Stoopid to his Skunk imprint.  The band released a self-titled album which included the song "Prophet" featuring Nowell, which was eventually covered by Sublime.  It seems that Nowell's ear was right on the mark: Slightly Stoopid's mix of bratty punk and laid-back reggae was a perfect formula that was eaten up by the public hungry for more bands like Sublime.

Eventually, Slightly Stoopid formed their own record label Stoopid Records to release their own albums.  They also expanded their lineup from a duo of founding members Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald to include drummer Ryan Moran, Oguer Ocon on percussion as well as C Money and Dela on brass to bolster their live sound.  Bouncing from continent to continent, Slightly Stoopid cultivated fans all over the world, from Europe to Asia to Australia to anywhere in between, because their live shows have a positive, infectious energy that gets the audience going.  “They make it worth our while--when we go out and people are having that good of a time, the energy goes back and forth. Just a good time--we rely on each other’s energy," says Kyle.  Adds Miles, "The most important part is being out there 200 days a year. You’re going back to towns twice a year, so people get to come out, and that gave us a real loyal following. Wherever we go, you have these Stoopidheads going crazy. For us, it’s pretty much the greatest job in the world.”

Despite the constant touring, Slightly Stoopid found time to write new songs and release albums consistently, including live albums and DVDs that channel the best aspect of their shows.  JamLegend is pleased to present a great selection of Slightly Stoopid songs including an awesome UB40 cover "I Would Do for You" from their anthology Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid as well as the original song "2 AM" from their studio album Chronchitis, available to play below.

For more info on Slightly Stoopid, check out their official site, MySpace, or Facebook.  Their albums are available via iTunes and Amazon as well as many other sites and record stores.  Slightly Stoopid will be on the road this month, of course, so check them out if they're coming to your town!
