Genre-bending is nothing new in music, but winning approval for your mad science project from old school masters can be tough. Inspired Flight, a San Diego, California duo, takes music to new heights by drawing inspiration from divergent genres and time periods--from the Beatles to the Gorillaz, Miles Davis to Gang Starr, and Pink Floyd to Radiohead--and formulating an exciting blend of hip hop, indie rock, electronica, dub, etc. Songwriter and self-taught musician Chavez and turntablist slash multi-instrumentalist OpenOptics layer analog instruments with digital soundscapes: with only the limits of their creativity reining them in, they weave together an intriguing, timeless sound that oscillates from yesterday to today to tomorrow.
After three years of hard work, they are set to release their debut We All Want to Fly with guest appearances by Living Legends members Eligh and Scarub, as well as Rugged Monk of Black Knights and Inspectah Deck from the one and only Wu-Tang Clan. Considering the amazing guest appearances as a seal of approval by these established artists, it goes a long way to show Inspired Flight have created something special that deserves close attention. Of course, success like this doesn’t come overnight: Chavez was inspired early by his dad shredding guitar on stage and picked up the instrument, while OpenOptics took guitar lessons in 3rd grade, bought his first turntables in 8th grade, and even joined a jazz trio in college. All of this musical experience culminates in We All Want to Fly, Inspired Flight’s first album. In addition to tons of lovingly crafted music, there is genuine emotion--from heartbreak to uplifting optimism-- at the core of this record. All of this must have resonated with the artists contacted for possible collaboration. Inspired Flight were actually surprised their inquiries were met with an enthusiastic yes from many parties, including Eligh of Living Legends who jumped on the tracks “Pull, Push, Let Go” and “An Ocean of Great Whites.”Inspired Flight’s We All Want to Fly is available exclusively for streaming and purchase at the band’s official site at www.inspiredflightmusic.com and will be available everywhere on July 6. Inspired Flight will be on tour in August, so please stay tuned to their site, MySpace, Facebook, or Twitter pages to stay in the loop! We’re featuring the title track “We All Want to Fly” with Inspectah Deck from the Wu-Tang Clan. Enjoy!
