Re: Power-Ups

Before diving into what’s changed, we first need everyone to understand how some users try to cheat on JamLegend. Cheating takes two main forms: (1) hacking, which means attempting to technologically manipulate JamLegend, or (2) botting, which fakes JamLegend gameplay.  Here’s how we address both.

1. Hacking (e.g. Cheat Engine)

We recently started using a new engine in the main game that was previously only in the JamBox and Showdowns.  The new engine directly helps combat hacking, as some users have known for some time.  Furthermore, hacked scores tend to be easily detectable because of their diversion from the norm.  It is our policy to ban those users found hacking or attempting to hack.

2. Botting

Since botting fakes human behavior, bots are very hard to detect.  We limit daily play to what is humanly possible (even for VIPs), which has disincentivized many botters but not dissuaded them all.  As with hacking, it is our policy to ban users found using bots.  Sometimes, botters admit to the act and, at other times, inhumanly high stats are a clear indication.  In both cases, we ban the accounts.

We investigate all user reports alleging hacking or botting, since all forms of cheating ruin the experience for everyone.  Unfortunately, some users send us intentionally false accusations.  At face value, these are hard to distinguish, so we investigate all claims, which can slow our response to legitimate reports.  The bottom line is this:  Without evidence, we will not ban a user.

OK, let’s move on to what’s new...

Ever since we started JamLegend, some of the most popular suggestions have been multipliers, star power, bonus notes, and other power-ups.  Here are just a few GetSatisfaction threads:

We’ve also received countless e-mails over the years suggesting power-ups and our response was always the same: “We agree! Some day...”  Well, as of this week, we’ve delivered on that promise.  Power-ups are finally here: http://blog.jamlegend.com/jamlegend-power-ups

Since the first introduction of power-ups, we’ve released these additional changes:

Power-up usage is transparent:

For every score on JamLegend, you’ll see what, if any, power-ups were used and, in the future, you’ll even be able to see when!

Power-ups can be earned by leveling-up:

Each earned power up can be used once per play.  For example, when you reach level 7, you get 1 free Lighting Power per play.  Combine your skill with the strategic use of power-ups to score score your best ever.  For the full list and descriptions, go to http://www.jamlegend.com/power-ups

Found cheaters are excluded from leaderboards:

Previously, banning accounts stopped the cheater, but their scores lived on.  That day has passed; the scores die with the account.

Now, let’s address some of the common concerns:

Power-ups let cheaters take over leaderboards:

The leaderboards have long been dominated by cheaters.  This is a problem that needs fixing, and power-ups help us do that.

Power-ups increase the variability of points on a given track; using a few or a lot, and when you use them, can make a big difference.  This helps us identify hacked or bot scores because we can see when a score was achieved with an unusual number of power-ups.  For example, if a track normally requires 2 Lightning Powers to earn over 200,000 points, and somebody did it without power-ups, then that user likely cheated.

Being able to more easily identify hacked and bot scores leads to a better leaderboard that highlights real users and real achievements.

Only the rich will get on leaderboards:

Skill is more necessary than ever to earn a place on the leaderboard, because power-ups create an additional skill to learn.  When and how you use a power-up determines its overall effect.  Think of it like Fire Power in Super Mario Bros; sure, you can try to beat the entire game as a little plumber, but everybody can benefit from a few fireballs now and then, and what really matters is when you use them!

Power-ups benefit new users:

New users are actually at a disadvantage, because they do not have the benefit of free power up uses that users of higher level have earned.

Users are leaving because of power-ups:

Many users are leaving not because of power-ups, but because of a daily play limit in their country. Advertisers in those countries were unwilling to support free play. We're upset by the situation too, but some countries simply don't contribute their share and continuing to operate for free in those countries hurts everybody else on JamLegend.

For those users unable to upgrade to VIP, we recommend playing unofficial songs: http://www.jamlegend.com/jam. You can play normal usage on those songs as if you lived in a country where advertisers are willing to support free official play. You can still play great tracks, attain high scores, and participate in all social interactions on JamLegend.

The staff is greedy:

This accusation is the most hurtful to us.  It costs a lot to run JamLegend.  Think of how much you play, how much you played before the limits, then multiply that by millions of people and a few years.

From the outset of JamLegend, we have had a single goal:  to make JamLegend self-sustainable.  After two and a half years, we’re still not there.  We’ve tried big things and small things, but every day it still costs more to run JamLegend than the money brought in.  That needs to change, or there won’t be a JamLegend for us to build and for you to play and enjoy.  We’re not trying to drive you away from JamLegend.  We don’t want to block your country or restrict your play.  We’re just trying to make sure there is a JamLegend for anybody.

When you buy a power-up, you support JamLegend.  When you become a VIP, you support JamLegend.  We’re literally just guys in small apartment running JamLegend 24/7 with our blood, sweat, and tears.  We’re not evil.  We care enough about JamLegend to continue working for you.  Do you care enough?

Stay tuned... Andrew, Arjun, Ryan, and Rob

Hmm...the answers are not suggesting a solution. So does this mean its going to stay the same or are you guys going to make some fair changes?
Afterall the changes are great and the power-ups appear to be really interesing. I hope you can get jamlegend to run on its and you will still have the endurance to keep trying, even if people attack you or critizice you too harsh.
I still think you need to reconsider this.
Hacking bots and all that is ok.
About adding more features that are not necessary but still people have to pay for, but not fixing other problems, like no 3nc on showdowns, or bugs, etc. then that is not ok.

Anyway, about the power ups issue...

I find it ok that you wanna add a new feature, but, problems that stilla rent solved about it.

1.What about old highscores? Does someone who just FCd a really hard song and took him/her months have to FC it again, with power ups, because otherwise he is in disadvantage?.
2.In case tha tperson would do that.. without paying, the use of power ups per day is limited, that means, that person would have to FC it first try to get a score that is now adapted to the new scores rule with power ups, or just pay to be able to use powerups everytime, which still does make the game unfair, and pay to play.

I understand you want to improve the game, I understand you need money, but the way you are acting about the website completly violates the spirit of jamlegend. I remember those times, when it was a little community, to p lay free online and have fun. Now it is a little community, with differences between those who pay and those who dont, with issues, big ones, like no 3nc in showdowns, where the founders never show up, only to add new features you often dont even reconsider or anything, and everything so much colder.

Honestly, it just does not seem like you're literally "just guys in small apartment running JamLegend 24/7 with our blood, sweat, and tears."

And " We care enough about JamLegend to continue working for you. Do you care enough?"

We do care enoguh, and we have been warning you about how jamlegend had gotten just worse and worse with time. This is not jamlegend anymore, this is some online game that gets worse everyday, loses its spirit and tries to evolve when it only does get worse.
That is why we have been telling yo ufor long to stop with this updates stuff, to stop adding new features, trying to make people pay.

If you really were so worried about jamlegend, if you even cared to .. play a song, or join a showdown to see how people act, or see it from inside instead of from that "We are the founders this is our game" point of view, you would realize all the stuff you do wrong, and jamlegend would be alive again. But youre just fucking it up more and more.

Sorry about the longass post. And btw, some PS xD
-If you were closer to the game, youd realize you can see whether soemone cheated or not, completly, without any need of power ups. That "If you get 200k with powerups and someone gets them wtihout them".. thats stupid.
If without powerups, everyone gets 50k and someone gets 200k theres a problem.
Such a failure to try to make a point with that.

And now ima stop writing forever xD

I'm just leaving a comment
COMMUNICATION. you guys need to communicate more with the community, the members. let us know about future updates, ask for our opinions, because after all, there wouldn't be a jamlegend without us members.. "We’re literally just guys in small apartment running JamLegend 24/7 with our blood, sweat, and tears" - doesn't seem like it! you guys seem like one of those huge companies with really bad customer support, that either take 1 month to provide some support, or provide no support at all. about the part where you say you only have the goal to make jamlegend self-sustainable, well, you're definetly not going anywhere if you continue like this.. you guys don't seem to understand much about marketing.
I think the idea of power-ups should have been more thoughtful. I paid to play, but I get discouraged when I saw that many of my best scores were removed from the top all by people who do not even worked to get there, only using power ups.
I think JamLegend was better off without power ups, since it is an idea that affects many users who strove to make your punctuation is in the top all Moreover, the idea of power ups was supported by people who now plays JamLegend or people who play very little. It was a very old idea, dating from 2009, that means that many of the person who thought up they will probably be long JamLegend stopped playing.
I realized that JamLegend needs people from various countries to buy vip, in order to keep the game, so it's vip was no problem for me, but then came the power ups, which in less than 5 days and are doing a real problem in JamLegend. I have seen many comments from people who feel very bad for having obtained a high punctuation using power ups, so much so that they are asking that punctuation is removed from the top all I think the power ups we do not benefit anyone.
It's interesting how a large part of your blog post pretends that players are complaining about power-ups as a concept, when they are really complaining about being able to PAY for the advantages that power-ups offer. Yes, it's obvious that if you add a new decision into the game (to wit: when to use the powerup), the game becomes more challenging. Is that a good idea? Maybe, but that's irrelevant.

The problem isn't that you put fire flowers into your metaphorical Mario Bros. The problem is that it seems like people can pay money to get more fire flowers than everybody else. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like that's the point. You can buy powerups. At least, that's what people in some threads seem to have a problem with. It's like if I play Street Fighter at an arcade with my friend, but my Hadoukens deal more damage because I put more quarters in. This results in an arguably unfair advantage, and an impoverished gaming experience.

Maybe you shouldn't act like your players are idiots and unable to see through your little press release. Just be honest. May I suggest: "Yes, pay to play. Deal with it." We'll still be miffed, but at least we won't think (that much) less of you for it.

Lame.
